Understanding Your Water Meter Readings
Keeping track of your water usage is essential for managing costs, detecting leaks, and conserving water. A water meter is a powerful tool to help you achieve this. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the basics of understanding your water meter readings.
Why It’s Important to Read Your Water Meter
Your water meter provides insights into how much water you consume. Regular readings can help you:
- Identify unusual spikes that may indicate leaks.
- Monitor your daily or monthly water usage.
- Avoid unexpected charges on your utility bill.
How to Read Your Water Meter
Reading your water meter is straightforward with these simple steps:
-
Locate Your Meter
Find your water meter, typically in a ground-level box or above ground near the property boundary or near the water supply entry point. -
Lift the Protective Flap
Carefully open the protective cover to reveal the meter dial. (if applicable) -
Record the Numbers
Note the numbers in the black boxes from left to right. Ignore the red numbers, as they represent litres and you are billed per kilolitre (1000 litre) and not per litre.
Tips for Managing Water Usage
- Take regular readings at the same time each month to track trends.
- Compare readings with your water bill to ensure accuracy.
How to Calculate Usage
Take readings at the same time each month, then subtract the previous reading from the new reading. See the example below:
Previous Reading: 248 KL
New Reading: 252 KL
New Reading – Previous Reading = Usage
252 – 248 = 4 KL Usage
